Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the pasta and cook according to package directions, until al dente. Drain the pasta, reserving about 1/2 cup of the pasta water.

While the pasta is cooking, melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and cook for about a minute, or until fragrant. Don't let it brown!

Add the cooked pasta to the skillet with the garlic butter. Toss to coat. If the sauce is too thick, add a little bit of the reserved pasta water.

Stir in the parmesan cheese until melted and creamy. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Add red pepper flakes if desired.

Serve the pasta immediately. Garnish with extra parmesan cheese and a sprinkle of fresh parsley if you like.
